Welcome! This is my portfolio for the Minor Audio Visual Design, if you have been to my site before this might be quite a bit different than the rest of the site. But this is a school assignment and I have to follow some rules this time.
My name is Arne van Iterson, I am a Electrical Engineering student at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. I am currently in my fourth year and I am doing a minor in Audio Visual Design. I chose this minor because I have been interested in the creative side of technology for a long time and thought this minor would be a great way to explore that. I imagine it is going to be quite a challenge, knowing barely any of the software we are going to use but it'll probably be fine.
I wanted to use this portfolio to document my entire time during the minor, not just the portfolio assignments. So I'll try to collect and include as much as I can. For review purposes; The assignments that are the most important are showcased by default, others are just the title. If you want to read these as well you can click on the title to open them up as well.
Anyhow, this is the journey of an Electrical Engineering student through a creative minor, I hope you enjoy. The minor runs from September 2024 to the end of January 2025. On this page I will document the work I do myself and in collaboration with the other students throughout the minor on a week by week basis.
I've written this website from scratch so keep in mind there might be some bugs here and there, viewing on a mobile device is highly discouraged!
Week 1 - Introduction
2-9 ~ 6-9-2024
ROTTT
Practice assignment Projection mapping - Collaboration with Maxim
One of the very first exercises we got was to use MadMapper to project on a cardboard box for starters. We started with a video from Maxim on the cardboard box but quickly moved on to an old CRT TV. We noticed that projecting on the old display worked quite well and looked authentic to using it traditionally, we put on some old commercials and gameplay footage, age-appropriate to the television we projected it on. It was quite enticing to look at so we added more monitors until we ran out.
Foley artists for two hours
Practice assignment Audio Design - Collaboration with Anouk, Calum, +2 others
Today's practice was to recreate sounds from a movie scene with any objects we could find. In the movie industry this is called Foley after the man who started it, Jack Foley. We were given a set of movie clips without any sound, out of which we chose a scene from the move 'No Country for Old Men'. Using a bin, a bottle, some flash drives, a binder and some more items; We created the following:
Week 2
5-9 ~ 13-9-2024
Introduction week No new entries
Week 3
16-9 ~ 20-9-2024
Analog projection
Practice assignment Visual Design - Collaboration with Anouk and Christian
The first practice assignment for visual design was to create an installation or performance without any software for the visuals; Audio made with Ableton was allowed. The installation had to be inspired by the World Press Photo 2021 Winner 'The First Embrace' by Mads Nissen.
Week 4
23-9 ~ 27-9-2024
Window into a World
Portfolio assignment 1 Visual Design
The first assignment for Visual Design is to build an installation that used projection mapping and was to be inspired by the phrase 'Window into another World'. My window shows how people around the world go through their workday and how different these environments can be.
Practice assignment Visual Design - Collaboration with Anouk, Christian and Jack
A practice assignment for Visual design where we had to create a visual installation based on the World Press Photo 2014 Winner 'Signal' by John Stanmeyer. We created an installation where the viewer is involved in finding the full story.
This assignment was not supposed to be a portfolio piece but I included it anyway because I thought it was nice.
The first assignment for Audio Design is to make a remix out of self-recorded samples of everyday items. Mostly as a show of skill and to get to know Ableton. I created a remix of various sound set to sound like video game music.
The second portfolio assignment for Visual Design is to create an abstract installation using a real world object as the main subject. I created an installation that shows the remarkable ability of the human mind to recognise faces and patterns, even in abstract shapes and visuals.
Practice Assignment Visual Design - Collaboration with Calum, Christiaan, Laith and Timo
The performance installation was a combined exercise for both Creative Research and Visual Design. The assignment was to create a performance installation that included the makers as part of the installation. The installation is to invoke some sort of emotion in the audience and has to draw inspiration from the World Press Photo 2022 Winner 'The Cinema of Kabul' by Bram Janssen.
Practice Assignment Projection Mapping - Collaboration with Layla and Malaika
We were sent out to make a statement with our projections. Armed with a projector, a laptop and a long power cord we went around the school to campaign for the installation of more microwaves. Not at all influenced by the fact that we waited half an hour for our turn at lunchtime.
The final installation to build for Visual Design was to be based on an existing piece of media that is shown in a different context. I built an installation that shows the evolution and continuing relevance of the detective story throughout time and media.
The last portfolio assignment was to create a tutorial about anything that I learned during the minor up untill now. I chose to make a tutorial about how to connect hardware to Madmapper via OSC. I decided to make this tutorial because, being an Electrical Engineering student, I had a lot of experience with hardware and I thought it would be a good way introduce the others to the possibilities of hardware in combination with projection mapping. The tutorial has been created for a beginner audience and is meant to be a stepping stone for more advanced projects.
Main mission You have reached the main mission process, we make something every week and all things will be documented here. The final product will be clearly marked.

Main mission Week 1 Collaboration with Glenn
The first week consisted of a very quick setup so we weren't really all that clear on the subject of our installation yet. We decided to go for something close to the photograph and the story behind it; The protests against the expansion of the open pit mine in Garzweiler, Germany.
This installation featured a news set with a teleprompter (without camera), a random member of the audience is sat down as the presenter and reads of the teleprompter while the rest of the audience looks on. The text is a setup to seem a regular news broadcast but the stories devolve into nonense and questionable statements, how far will the presenter go?
This installation features a set of tasks to perform by the audience set in an environment ment to feel like a toxix workplace, the tasks on display are to conflict with internal values of the audience member and the environment is uncomfortable on purpose. The audience is to not finish the installation by refusing to perform one or more of the tasks.
The demo's were slightly shifted these two weeks so we decided to run this installation once again with some improvements based on feedback from last week.
Events in the future have not yet been documented. Thank you for reading up until here and please come back later.
